Short answer: Your first week at the gym only needs three short full-body sessions, a plan written down before you walk in, and one conversation with a coach. Most gym anxiety comes from not knowing what to do next, so remove that and the rest gets much easier.
Before day one
- Book a tour so you know where everything is before you train
- Write your workout on your phone so you are never standing around deciding
- Pick a time that is usually quieter if crowds bother you; early morning and late evening are easiest
The first-week plan
Do this workout three times, with a rest day between each session.
- Leg press: 3 sets of 10
- Chest press machine: 3 sets of 10
- Seated cable row: 3 sets of 10
- Dumbbell shoulder press: 2 sets of 10
- Plank: 3 holds of 20 to 30 seconds
- 10 minutes easy cardio to finish
Machines are the best place to start because they guide the movement. Choose a weight you could lift for 12 to 15 reps and stop at 10.
How to handle gym anxiety
- Nobody is watching you as closely as you think; everyone is focused on their own set
- Headphones help you stay in your own head
- Ask staff to show you a machine; it is part of their job
- Track your sessions so you can see progress in your own numbers
What to expect in your body
Some soreness 24 to 48 hours after your first sessions is normal. It fades quickly once your body adjusts. Sharp pain is different; stop and ask a coach.
Week two and beyond
Add a little weight or one more rep each week. After three to four weeks, a coach can move you to a split routine built around your goal. At Animal Paradise, personal training is a separate service and your first consultation is free.
