Short answer: Most first-time competitors need 16 to 24 weeks of prep, depending on starting condition. Pick your show and division first, work backward to set your start date, and give posing practice as much attention as diet and training. Do it with a coach who has competed.
Step 1: Choose your show and division
NPC divisions include Bikini, Figure, Wellness, Physique, Classic Physique and Bodybuilding. Each is judged differently, so look at recent winners in your division before you start. Choose a show date far enough out that you are not rushing.
Step 2: Set an honest timeline
Count backward from show day. Leaner athletes may need around 16 weeks; most first-timers do better with 20 weeks or more. A longer prep means a slower, more sustainable diet and less muscle lost along the way.
Step 3: Training through prep
Keep lifting heavy enough to hold muscle while calories drop. Cardio usually increases gradually through prep rather than starting high.
Step 4: Nutrition and check-ins
Calories come down in steps based on weekly progress, with protein kept high. Regular check-ins with photos and weight trends let your coach adjust before small problems become big ones.
Step 5: Posing is half the show
Judges score what you present. Practice mandatory poses several times a week from the start of prep, not the last month. Animal Paradise has a private posing room for exactly this.
Step 6: Peak week and show day
Peak week fine-tunes how you look on stage. It should be planned by your coach, not copied from the internet. On show day, bring your suit, tan, posing shoes, food and water, and arrive early.
